Blog Post #37 "In case of damage"

Explain what self preservation means to you? Is it the most important thing? Would you lie because of it?

Self preservation is protecting oyurself, it is important but it is not everything. I probably would lie if it meant protecting myself.

Blog Post #36 "The Rabbit Pen"

Tally had changed her mind about the Smoke and the operation, but what will she about all that now? Whose side is she on

I think tally is on the smoke side now, she has been with them, and seen how the town is, and when she did that, she realized that they are good people and didn't want to betray them after they let her into their town.

Blog Post #35 "Invasion"

Is this the climax of the book? Explain why or why not.

I do think it is. Special Circumstances is probably on their way. This means there is a 50% chance of her getting away or being caught by Special Circumstances.

Blog Post #34 "Burning Bridges"

Read the following quote David says to Tally. "What you do, the way you think, makes you beautiful." Name one person in your personal life, and one in your academic life...what makes this person beautiful?

My mom, not that she isn't beautiful physiclly but she is so smart and they way she puts things into her perspective makes her beautiful.

Blog Post #33 "Pretty Minds"

Respond to the following quote, what does it mean to you/to the story? "Becoming pretty doesn't change the the way you look...it changes the way you think." How would you want to change mentally and phyiscally if you were "pretty"?

1) I would give myself a bigger vertical, so i could jump out of the building in volleyball
2) I would get more arm strength so i could hit harder
3) I would change my eye color, because i hate poop brown.
4) I would make myself to where i dont over think things so i freak out.
5) I wish i wasnt so emotional, i get very sad easily.
6) I would make myself shorter, i hate being taller than EVERYONE.

thats all i can think of ;D

Blog Post #32 "The Secret"

What does the following quote tell you about the city and society in general. "But you do know about genetics don't you? Sure I know all about genes. I knew two sisters, uglies, who looked almost the same. But parents and children? Thats just weird."

Well, it shows just how the Society is trying to protect New Pretty Town. They don't know of parets and children looking alike because most all parents go through surgery, so when they change they look different than they did.

Predict what you think being "pretty" is.

I think being pretty makes a big difference in how you act, think, look and feel.
It takes away your entire personality.

Blog Post #31 "Bravery"

Find an example of imagery, persoification, and a simile. Quote directly and give page numbers.

Imagery; "The orchids glowed with pale malevolence in the moonlight, a frozen sea against the dark forest shore." pg 245

Persoification; (orchids)
"....choking the life out of other plants, out of the soil itself, selfish and unstoppable." pg.244

Simile; "Like a walking poison, she killed everything."(p.244)

Does it require bravery to meet David's parets? Why or why not?

To an extent it requires bravery. Some people feel differently about it. I think it does not require much bravery unless you over think the situation.

Blog Post #30 "Suspicion"

Do you think Shay has the right to be jealous of Tally? Why or why not?

NOT AT ALL. That made me angry when I read that. Shay is making WAY to big of a deal about Tally and David's connection. Shay and David have no closer relationship than friends and to loose a friend over the fact is just plain stupid.

Tally recived a gift from David in the chapter that is special. Have you ever recived something that made others jealous as this gift did? Did your gift have a meaning behind it as Tally's had?

I have not been jealous of a gift that was given, but I have thought to myself "I wish I could recive that from someone."
I have recived a gift that probably got some ooh's and awh's.
Last year in sixth grade, I had a boyfriend, and on my birthday he came to my house with my birthday present and he got me a neclace from James Avery I was really excited but that ended soon after that. hahha.
I doubt anone was jeaous though.

Blog Post #29 "Heartthrob"

Why would it have been easier for Tally to activate the pendant when she got to the smoke?

If she had activated it she wouldn't have begun to have feelings for David, and she wouldn't feel so guilty about turning her back on Shay.

Blog Post #28 "David"

If David's parents were doctors, why do you think they ran away? Support your answer with textual evidence.

I think David's parents hadn't realized the danger in the operation and when they figured out what it was capable of they didn't want to participate in the operation anymore, and they knew they would get in trouble for knowing what it could do, so they ran away.

"They reversed the operation" Page No. 218

Blog Post #27 "Work"

Find an image of a skyline like the one Tally sees. Post it. What is beautiful about it? Is there anything ugly about it?

I choose this one because of hw the building are alighned, it looks like something you would see like on a boat, movig away from the city, or like looking out from a distance but it just remided me of the image I pictured while reaading the book.

There is NOTHING ugly about this.

Blog Post #26 "The Model"

What do you think about Shay's description of a model? Shay and Tally have a skewed view of our time, but what have they got right?

I think that alot of what Shay has to say about the modes in he magezing is very true.
Looking at a magazine it's basicly just showing someone elses idea of pretty. When you look at someone, as our society has ead us to believe that to ybe pretty you need to be skinny, long hair, designer outfits, rich, and like a partier. But that is only from one person's perspective. My idea of pretty is being able to wake up fix yourself without caking on makeup, and being okay with how you look.
But on the other hand, id Modeling is what gets the bills paid, then why not?
I don't believe in judging people by what they do.

Blog Post #25 "Lies"

Characterization of David

David is suspicioous of Tally at the beginning, he is trying to explain to Tally about the smoke and about how they live there. As they keep talking they begin to grow much closer.

Get a picture to represent the Smoke

I used this picture because it doesn't look really up to the technology we ave now. It kind of looks old and abandoned but there could still be something there that people could use it for.

Blog Post #24 "Bug Eyes"

List the important events in Chronological order.

1) A man puts a face mask on Tally
2) The rangers tell Tally about the hellicopters and fires
3) Rangers explain the flowers to Tally
4) Tally reaches the bald head that Shay's note said.

Respond to the following quote:
"Tally was stuck out here in the wild forever. Ugly for life. Her only way home was to betray her friend."

Tally has to decide weather to go along with the plan and betray Shay, or to stand by Shay and stay Ugly.

Blog Post #23 "Firestorm"

Give one example of each of these from the chapter: imagery, personification & simile.

Imagery: "Billowing clouds of smoke surrounded her, blotting out the sky. A raggall of flame moved through the flowers, giving off a wave of blistering heat." page No. 172
Personification: "The fire was growing stronger. Fingers of it shot up the hill, leaping from one beautiful flower to another, leaving them scorched and black." page No. 172
Simile: "At first there was a sound like a roaring wind in her dreams."

What do you think the flying machine was?

I thinkk it was people on a mission trying to find Tally.

Blog Post #21 "The Worst Mistake"

Predict what you think will happen next.

I think that Tally doesn't know what she's getting herself into. And she is not going to like what will happen next.

Have you ever made yourself do something that you didn't want to do because you knew you had to?

Well, I've made myself study for a test even though I didn't want to. But it paid off in the end.
:D

Blog Post #20 "Spagbol" p. 147

Invent a dry food you would ttake with you on your journey if you were Tally. What would it be and how would you make it?

I would take PIZZA. Pizza is something you can eat cold or hot. While I am on my journey, I could start a fire and just heat it up.

*Make a list of things you would miss about your home if you were forced to leave it as Tally was.

* My phone

* My doggy

* My sister

* My kitty

* My mommy

* My daddy

* My pool

* My bed

* My friends

* My Ipod

Blog Post #19 "Leaving" p. 139

Why do you think Tally ultimately decides to figure out where Shay is?

I think Tally is thinking to herself that she will find Shay, and when she see's what Shay has traveled to, and how Shay is living now, she will then decide wheather she is going to turn Shay in or stay with Shay and not break her promise.

Blog Post #18 "Infilitrator"

Give in Chronological order the list of important events in this chapter.

1. Tally goes to give Dr.Cable a visit

2. She told her about what Shay had already revealed

3. Dr.Cable explains the list wasw made so only Tally could understand

4. She learns she will need to be the "infiltrator"

5. Dr.Cable convinces Tally to agree

Blog Post #17 "Peris" p. 120

Why do you htink Peris comes back? Support your answer with textual evidence.

You'll love it, Tally. Being pretty's the best thing ever. And I'll enjoy it about a million times more once you're there with me."

For some reason, I think Peris is going to turn his back on Tally and end up like working with the people of Special Circumstances.

Blog Post #16 "Ugly for Life" p. 111

Respond to the following quote:
"Everywhere she went, eyes looked away. But it was the most visible she had ever felt."

I think that she finally see's that just because she's not pretty doesn't mean she's not there.

Blog Post #15 "Special Circumstances"

Summarize the chapter highlighting the important events in chronological order. Predict what you think will happen next.

In this chapter, Dr. Cable brings Tally in and tells her that they are looking for Shay and some other people who have decided to leave New Pretty Town.
Tally remembers the promise she made Shay and decides to turn doewn the offer to help them. When Tally doesn't give in, they tell her that she has to choose between turning in Shay, or not being pretty.

I predict that Tally will not give in and go to find Shay and elp her instead of turning her in.

Characterization: Dr. Cable

Dr. Cable is not happy with Shay leaving New Pretty Town, and now she is threatening Tally about not becoming pretty. She seems very dominant when it comes to something she wants.

Blog Post B. #14 "Operation"

Summarize the chapter highlighting the important events in chronological order. Predict what you think will happen next.

Tally was really excited to be turning 16 and becoming pretty. When she was finally ready to be changed, she gets the news that she is being brought into "Special Circumstances".
I think that Tally will end up refusing to help the doctors and go to look for Shay.

Blog Post A. #14 "Last Trick"

Respond to the following Quote, what does it mean to you?

"We don't have to look like everyone else, Tally, and act like everyone else. We've got a choice. We can grow up any way we want."

Well to me, I have to agree. Like i think I have said, I would prefer not to be like everyone else.
I want to be unique. And to add, I absolutly do not want to be around someone who is like a clone of everyone else.

Blog Post #12 "Waiting for David" p. 69

What does the following quote from the chapter tell you about the city?

"That was onw thing about eing outside the city: It made all that nature stuff they taught in school seem alot more usefull. She remembered now how the rainfall fell on the moutains and soaked into the ground..."

It tells you about how fake the town is, and how what they are learning in school and stuff is useless because they keep all the pretty's kept up together inside of the city. So all the stuff they teach is pointless.

Blog Post #11- "The Rusty Ruins" p.61

Write a one paragraph summary of this chapter. Tell the important events in chronological order.
Shay keeps asking Tally to go Hoverboarding with her. When Taly finally gives in, she learns how to hover board. Then Shay invites her to go to the Rusty Ruins. When they get there Shay shows Tallk a rollercoaster. Then Shay tells Tally about David.

Find two similies in this chapter and quote them, as well as the page number.
A shape emerged from the forest, a long spine that rose and fell like a frozen wave. Pg. 63

Every building sported jagged spurs of metal sticking from its broken walls, like bones jutting from a long-dead animal. Pg. 62

Blog Post #10- "Rapids" p.53

In this chapter Tally says "I kind of like being fooled about some things." Do you agree with Tally, or would you rather know the reality behind everything? Why?
I like being fooled by things because if we knew everything life would be predictable and nothing would make anything worth doing.

Find information about the origin of white water rafting and post it here, along with the website URL.
It is interesting to note that whitewater rafting was one of the earliest forms of transportation. It was not only used for carrying people but also for transferring goods from one place to another. However, it became quite popular as a form of leisure activity in the 1980s.
In 1811, the first recorded attempt to navigate the Snake River in Wyoming was planned by the Overland Astorians. While attempting to boat the stretch below Jackson Hole, the river was found to be too treacherous and it came to be called ?Mad River.?
The rubber river raft is believed to have been invented in the early 1840s. It was first made by Lt. John Fremont, who was then serving in the U.S army and Horace H. Day. They invented the rubber raft with the intention of surveying the Rocky Mountains and the Great Plains. Although the raft was invented in the mid-nineteenth century, it was not until the turn of the century that the first ever commercial whitewater trip was undertaken. At first, surplus military rafts were used as boats and it was only much later that inflatable rafts were used.
Private companies played a major role in augmenting the rafting business. In 1956, one of the members of the most affluent business families of America, John D. Rockefeller built a resort that introduced one of the first floating trips in the country. However, it only evoked a lukewarm response. Later, in the 1960s and 1970s, exclusive whitewater rafting companies were formed. These include the Becker-Cooke Expeditions, Hatch River Expeditions and Slickrock Adventures

Blog Post #8- "Facing the Future"

Refelct the following quotes from the chapter, what does each mean to you.
"Making ourselves feel ugly is not fun."
Well this makes me think of someone who is not so confident with themself.
"This whole game is desighned to make us hate ourselves."
When I read this I think of someone who is taking life as a game and is insecure on how they look or feel about themselves.
"Everyone judged everyone else based on their apperarence. People who were taller got better jobs...people killed one another over stuff like having different skin color"
This just makes me think of our world today.
"It's the only way to make people equal."
This sounds like someone came up with an idea about giving people equal rights not based on how they look.

Blog Post #7- "Wipeout" p.33

Think of another book, movie or comic (exc) in which people use hover boards. How are they used? If possible post a video of this.
Back to the Future!

There are several theories about how the Hoverboard could work. Space Magnetics (originally named Hovertech) experimented with ferrofluid force fields , attempting to ionize a column of air interacting with a magnetic fluid, forming a bubble which the board could rest on. This technology was never made to work, as the ferrofluid simply stuck to the sides of its casing when activated.Another possible way is by use of geomagnetics, the act of repelling against the earth's magnetic field. So far there have been no signifant advances toward completing a working device that can do this. It would require a large magnetic pull, as the earth's magnetic field is very weak. There is one technology however that shows real promise in the field. HoverTech claims that they will be able to turn a column of air into a conductive plasma, run an electrical current through it, and repel against that field with powerful magnets. This is a technology called Optomagnetic Suspension.

Why do you think the new preties don't come back to Uglyville to visit? Describe their physical & mental transformation into new pretties.
I think they didn't come back because when they turned pretty they didn't miss what they had. Maybe it was easier for them to leave their old life by not looking back, instead of coming back and forth.

Well obviously when you become pretty, you don't look the same way you did. They're feelings about Uglies didn't matter because they don't care.

Blog Post #6- "Shay" p.23

Write a one paragraph summary of this chapter.
After tally jumped off the tower of the Garbo Mansion she is sure she will be caught. Tally knows that if she is caught she will never be able to become pretty, and she will never be able to once again be with Peris. With the police scattered around the town, Tally manages to escape back tot he bridge where she came from. There as she is sneaking through the woods, she meets another ugly, Shay. After they get to talking they decide they should be friends.

What have you learned about Shay? Is she like Tally? Make a prediction about what will happen between Tally and Shay.
So far, I have learned that Shay also has an urge to see what New Pretty Town is like, risking the chance of being caught. Yes, Shay is like Tally in the way that they are both curious as to see how far they can go without being caught. They both seem adventurous.
I predict that Shay and Tally will both be good friends in the near future. They seem to have clicked well together by the bridge.

Blog Post #5- "Bestfriends Forever" p. 11

Why do you think New Pretty Town advocates bungee jumping?
I think that the people of New Pretty Town will do anything to make there image look better to make the Uglies look forward to becoming pretty.

Find information about the history of bungee jumping and post it along with the website URL.
Bungee has quite an old origin. The idea of this way of jumping comes from the ancient ritual "Gkol" performed in the Pentecost Island in the Pacific Archipelago of Vanuatu. The legend says that in the village Bunlap a man called Tamalie had a quarrel with his wife and she ran away and climbed a Banyan tree where she wrapped her ankles with liana vines. When Tamalie came up to her, the woman jumped from the tree and so did her husband not knowing what had his wife done. So he died but the woman survived. The men of Bunlap were very impressed by this performance and they began to practise such jumps in case they got in similar situation. This practice transformed into a ritual for rich yam harvest and also for proving manhood.Modern bungee jumping as we know it today actually started on the 1st of April ( Fools' Day ) 1979 when group of people from the Oxford University Dangerous Sport Club, impressed by a film about "vine jumpers", jumped from 245-Clifton Suspension Bridge in Bristol, England. Using nylon braided, rubber shock cord instead of vines, and dressed in their customary top hat and tails, they performed a four man simultaneous jump .The enthysiasts promptly were arrested for this. But at least hit the world press the next day. The new adrenaline mania has been started. The D.S.C. performed many other jumps, including one off the Golden Gate Bridge. In early 1988, A.J. Hackett and Chris Allum, opened the first commercial jump site in Ohakune, New Zealand. Hackett also made a great commercial show in 1987 when he jumped from the Eiffel Tower in Paris.. As part of the site publicity, Hackett performed an astounding bungee jump from the Eiffel Tower! Nowadays there have already been a lot of towers, cranes, bridges and even hot-air balloons serving as platforms for jumping and bungee is the simplest and easily understood of the aerial extreme sports.

Blog Post # 4- "Bestfriends Forever" p. 11

Characterization: Tally
To start off, Tally is an Ugly. She is 15 and when she turns 16 she will become a pretty.
She seems to have some kind of feelings for peris, and she misses him. She also seems determined to achive her goal of becoming pretty and being able to reunite with Peris again.
Characterization: Peris
Peris is pretty. He has changed since he became pretty. From what we have read he seems to want to be friends with tally again, but he knows it would not be right. So when he makes Tally promise not to get into trouble, you can tell that he does want to be friends with Tally again, but he was being safe, for Tally's sake.

How do you feel about Tally and Peris's friendship? Are they true bestfriends? Why or why not?
I feel that the relationship between Tally and Peris is real. So far it seems like both of them sort of miss what they had before. I believe that when Tally turns pretty, they will both be very gratefull to be together again.

"new pretty town" p. 3

Find & quote one oxymoron from the chapter or one example of irony.

I didn't have the book, so I was no able to find an answer to this question.

Why do you think Tally chose to wear a mask to the party that was deemed "white tie" ?

I think she chose to wear it because masks were made to cover up something that was not eant to be shown. Since she was an ugly, her wearing the mask was a very smart choice.

Masks have been designed in innumerable varieties, from the simplest of crude “false faces” held by a handle to complete head coverings with ingenious movable parts and hidden faces. Mask makers have shown great resourcefulness in selecting and combining available materials. Among the substances utilized are woods, metals, shells, fibers, ivory, clay, horn, stone, feathers, leather, furs, paper, cloth, and corn husks. Surface treatments have ranged from rugged simplicity to intricate carving and from polished woods and mosaics to gaudy adornments.

Blog Post #2- "New Pretty Town"

Have you ever had a friend like Peris who abandoned your friendship after moving? Explain.

Well actually I havn't had a friend to that to me, but I have done that to someone else when I moved here to Magnolia. I literally had about 5 bestfriends, we were inseperable. When I found out that I was moving I kind of knew that we weren't going to have as strong of a relationship. I havn't talked to any of them since 2007. Although some times I miss them, I absolutley do not regret moving to magnolia.

Describe the following terms in your own words:

toothbrush pill: a pill that brushes your teeth for you instead of using a toothbrush.
cacophony: a big use of sound or people.

Before Reading

How do you define beauty? What would the world be like if everyone was beautiful?
I define beauty as being pure and true to yourself. If the whole world was beautiful no one would stand out. It wouldn't be interesting.

Post a picture of something of something beautiful and something ugly....
